Morgan Stanley
Corporate Website
Redesign

A restrained, line-driven rework of a 90-year-old financial institution's public site. Same voice, same navy, far fewer boxes.

01 — Overview

Morgan Stanley's site carries an enormous amount of material: research, podcasts, eight business lines, careers, investor relations. The content is strong. The surface it sits on has accumulated cards, panels and competing calls to action over the years.

This concept keeps the institution's existing navy, its editorial voice and its information architecture, and rebuilds the visual layer around a single idea: a ruled grid. Hairlines do the work that boxes and shadows used to do. Nothing is added that a line cannot already imply.

02 — Principles
01 Rules, not boxes Every card, panel and drop shadow is replaced by a 1px rule. Separation comes from alignment and space instead of enclosure.
02 One idea per screenful The homepage asks the visitor to do one thing at a time: read the lead, then choose a business, then browse research.
03 Type carries the tone A transitional serif at large sizes gives the institution its weight. The interface layer stays quiet in a neutral grotesque.
04 Navy as ink, not paint The brand navy is used for text and one full-bleed section per page. No gradients, no tinted overlays, no decorative fills.

One lead story, eight businesses, then research

The homepage opens on a single piece of research rather than a carousel. Below it, the eight business lines are listed as a ruled index — scannable in one pass, and the same list the navigation uses.

The same rules, one column

On small screens the grid collapses to a single column and the rules stay. Navigation opens as a full-height ruled index rather than a stack of accordions.
